Most people know what they want in their child’s room decor, they simply need a few tips on how to handle one aspect of the room decor or another. This quick read will provide simple tips that might make a big difference, if you are starting the decorating process for a baby who will soon be here, or redoing the room of a young child.

A child’s room need to have the possibility to evolute with the needs of the child as s/he grows and develops new interests. It is a room that frames several activities, sleep, play and school work. It is imperative to consider all these when planning how to set it up.

The bed is the most important piece of furniture in the room. In function of the size of the room, the age of the child and the number of children who share a room you might consider bunk beds or a loft bed. Even when a child does not have to share a room loft beds offer the advantage to free up a lot of floor space… It is however preferable to buy an adult bed as children beds as by nature of poor quality and meant to last only a couple of years.

For school work a desk is a necessity. School work should take place in comfortable conditions to get the best results. The desk should fit the child’s size. Choose preferably a desk that is adjustable so that it will last longer and you will not need to replace it when your child grows a couple of inches every year. You can even use a table top, or an unused door, placed on cubes to serve as a desk. Add to the structure when you need to. The cubes will also serve as storage for books or toys, as well as support for the improvised desk top.

A child’s room is a place to play… This also means toys, and in our culture often a lot of toys. Don’t hesitate to add many shelves. Floating shelves work well for light toys and are very decorative, but do not tolerate much weight. Bookcases or wall shelves are probably better in a kid’s room.
